Aaron Rai Secures Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship in Dramatic Playoff Battle Against Tommy Fleetwood
Aaron Rai demonstrated exceptional composure to claim the prestigious Abu Dhabi title on the final day, beating his compatriot in a tense play-off following a rollercoaster last day of competition.
Rai nailed a crucial birdie putt from around eight feet to seal the win, echoing his sole prior Rolex Series success at the 2020 Scottish Open, which was also a playoff victory over Fleetwood.
Final Round Excitement
Rai started the final round with a single stroke advantage over fellow Englishman Fleetwood and Danish golfer Højgaard. He finished with a total score of twenty-under after a up-and-down, 67 closing round that featured seven birdie putts and two bogeys.
The challenger edged one shot ahead with two holes to play after a birdie on the 16th, but his rival pulled level again on the 17th and then failed to convert a 10-foot birdie attempt to claim victory on the final hole.
Play-Off Decider
That led to a playoff at the Yas Links course where the eventual winner prevailed to claim the championship and $1.5 million (ÂŁ1.13m) in winnings.
