British Designer Antony Price, Celebrated for Creating Looks for Iconic Acts Like Bowie and Duran Duran, Dies at 80.
Fashion legend Antony Price, the influential UK-based designer responsible for a series of unforgettable images favored by musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has passed away at the age of 80.
Price was best known for his architectural shapes and dramatic aesthetics, most notably the light-hued ensembles that featured in the iconic band Duran Duran's classic music video for "the song Rio".
"They honored him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance online."
This news arrives just weeks after he presented his most recent collection in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. Artist Lily Allen showcased a dress that paid homage to the iconic black velvet "revenge dress" made famous by the late Princess Diana.
A Lasting Legacy
Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price relocated to London during the sixties to enroll at the prestigious Royal College of Art.
Upon completing his studies, he started his work in menswear at Stirling Copper and was the creator of the tight, button-detailed trousers that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger famously wore during the band's "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.
He founded his own label in 1979 and held his debut runway presentation a year later. The show opened with creations worn by model Jerry Hall, who also wore the marriage dress Price created for her for her nuptials with Sir Mick Jagger.
Working with Legends
A frequent collaborator of musical chameleon David Bowie, Price created the memorable jacket the star wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His characteristic talent to merge tailoring for all genders along with his masterful technique in shaping body-hugging looks established him as a "one-of-a-kind talent," as stated by the British Fashion Council.
During the nineties, he commenced designing ensembles for the then-Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, including several ensembles for her US tour after assuming the title.
With a vocation that covered half a century, Price staged what would be his last show in London last month in conjunction with the fashion brand 16Arlington.

The industry laments the passing to a genuine innovator whose influence on the visual landscape of music remains indelibly etched.
