Harvard ex-president Summers Leaves from ChatGPT Maker's Leadership

Board Resignation
The economist stated he would withdraw from public positions after Congressional panel made public his repeated messages with Epstein

One-time economic leader the Harvard professor is leaving the governing body at the ChatGPT creator, just days after a batch of digital correspondence between him and late convicted sex offender the disgraced billionaire became public.

He commented in a release that he was "thankful for the opportunity to have served, optimistic about the prospects of the company, and eagerly await following their progress".

The prominent academic, who formerly led the Ivy League institution, stated on earlier this week that he would be stepping back from public roles due to his association with Epstein.

Message Exchange

The newly public emails showed that the official communicated with Epstein until the eve of the financier's 2019 arrest for alleged human trafficking of minors.

In another announcement, the technology organization said it respected Summers' determination to resign.

"We appreciate his many contributions and the insight he offered to the Board," OpenAI commented.

Legislative Background

This development comes after the two houses of the US legislature voted on recently to approve a measure that would mandate the US justice department to release its documents on the case.

The bill will then move to the desk of the White House for signature. The President has said he intends to sign the legislation, after reversing his stance on the subject following pushback from his base.

Correspondence Findings

A group of Epstein-connected correspondence disclosed by the legislative panel last week mentioned multiple well-known personalities in the Epstein's former circle, without implying any criminal activity by those individuals.

The communications indicated that the economist and Jeffrey Epstein often met for meals, with the billionaire often trying to introduce the official to influential world leaders.

Individual Statement

After the correspondence were released with the wider community, he stated he took "total ownership for my ill-advised judgment to persist in corresponding with the financier".

He further stated that he desired "to restore confidence and mend bonds with the people nearest to me".

Career Background

Summers served in senior posts under two Democratic presidents; functioning as treasury secretary under President Clinton, and as leader of the National Economic Council under the former leader.

He led the university from 2001 to 2006 and is still a academic there. When announcing his step-down from public roles earlier on Monday, he stated he would continue his educational duties.

Other Impacts

Following the economist's announcement on Monday, the Washington think tank, a progressive policy institute in DC where Summers was a researcher, announced that he was not affiliated with the institution.

Summers joined the directorate of OpenAI, which makes the language model, in last year - following a failed attempt to remove its CEO Sam Altman.
