The boxing world is in a notable downturn this year, with limited compelling matchups and markedly reduced engaging contests than usual. The possibility of a high-stakes and fascinating heavyweight battle between Joseph Parker and Fabio Wardley at the iconic O₂ Arena provides some solace to the struggling sport. The last man standing will almost certainly face the world champion Usyk next season. In opposition, the unsuccessful boxer is expected to regret the inevitable erosion of their hard-won plaudits.

The quiet attraction of each fighter is amplified by the fact that they now are on the cusp of a chance at a world title. Yet neither is invincible. This is Parker's fortieth professional bout and, apart from three losses, he has been dropped multiple times by multiple challengers. He always gets up but Wardley punches with greater force than any opponent he's encountered – with the exception of Wilder who looked a shell of a knockout artist when Parker secured a one-sided points victory in the end of 2023.

Wardley, previously a white-collar fighter, who only started boxing when he was twenty, had zero amateur background and has consistently faced questions regarding his technical limitations. But he is similarly close to a shot at the title.

“This is the biggest bout, currently, in the heavyweight category. These two guys have accepted the challenge when neither fighter had to agree to this match. Joe Parker is the WBO interim champion and they have already ordered Usyk to fight him, but he was sidelined. Joseph insists on fighting.

“Wardley is similarly well-placed and he merely needed to be patient for his time. He said ‘I refuse.’ He desired to compete – and with Parker because it offers him an opportunity to accelerate his path.”

Parker, who turns 34 in January, said: “It's win or go home. I am not thinking about losing. I honor my adversary and his achievements and how he has prepared for this fight. But I am on a different level and I am planning to demonstrate it on fight night.”

Wardley, approaching 31, and he said: “It's a huge evening for the both of us. It is undoubtedly the largest contest of my career and the biggest fight of my life. But every time I step up I elevate my performance. Saturday will be no exception. The gap between Parker's status and where people think I am has been a frequent topic throughout my career.

“He's a seasoned veteran for a extended duration, with a numerous contests on his resume. In no way is he an aged fighter but he has been in the game for a while and had some heavy fights. I've also endured brutal fights and I realize they cause wear and tear. He has been in a significantly more of those fights than I have.”

But the lingering doubt persists that Parker is likely to be too veteran, and too skilful, for Wardley. He is favored to secure a hard-fought contest with the conviction that he is next in line for a title shot against Usyk – currently the top heavyweight globally by a significant margin.
