Manchester United Set to Sign German Forward Lea Schüller from Bayern Munich

The Women's Super League club are on the verge of sealing the deal for prolific German striker Lea Schüller in a permanent move away from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.

A Major Acquisition for the WSL Side

Schüller, who has six months left on her contract, is known as a consistent goal-getter for her club and the national team. Having scored more than 100 goals for Bayern and scored 54 times in 82 appearances for her country. Her arrival will be seen as a marquee signing for the Women’s Super League side.

Her exit from Munich has been anticipated since she appeared to be holding back emotions while thanking the German club’s supporters after a win over Bayer Leverkusen this month.

It was reported in December that the Frauen-Bundesliga was set to lose one of its leading forwards. Per reports, all the paperwork for the transfer have now been completed.

Consistent Goal Threat to Strengthen United's Attack

The 28-year-old’s arrival should represent a significant uplift to the team's forward line. Schüller has been remarkably reliable in front of goal in Germany’s top flight.

  • For seven consecutive seasons, including the last term, she achieved at least a double-figures tally of league goals.
  • She claimed the Golden Boot in the 2021-22 season with a haul of 16 goals.

Building Momentum at Carrington

The acquisition of Schüller’s signature coincides with a period when United appear to be building positive momentum.

Their recent performances feature qualifying for the Champions League knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a win in the League Cup quarter-finals.

In the transfer market, the winter break has seen additional activity:

  1. The signing of Sweden defender Hanna Lundkvist on a multi-year deal.
  2. The contract extension for Japanese midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, who has become fan favourite since joining in 2023.

On Miyazawa’s extension, a club official stated: “Miyazawa is now a vital part to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and skill enables her and the team to dominate play from central areas.”

Lundkvist, who has joined from a club in the American league, added: “You can sense how much they [United] have progressed in the last few years, playing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and now featuring in the Champions League.”
