The Manager Maresca Describes Lead-Up Time as The 'Worst Two Days' at the Club
Chelsea tactician Enzo Maresca remarked that the preparation to Saturday's win against Everton represented "the most challenging 48 hours" of his tenure at Stamford Bridge.
The Italian made a puzzling comment in his post-match interview even after earning a 2-0 win at home through strikes from Cole Palmer and Malo Gusto.
Those points propelled Chelsea back into the Premier League's top four, perhaps improving the mood after a loss to Atalanta in the Champions League that had extended the side's drought without a win to four fixtures.
However, when questioned about Gusto's contribution and general display, Maresca unexpectedly divulged his annoyance over the previous 48-hour period at the organization.
"How the squad want to learn has been fantastic and this is the explanation why I commend them - because with a host of challenges, they are performing admirably after a difficult week," he stated.
"Since I joined the club, the previous 48 hours have been the toughest because several people failed to back us."
Pressed on the specifics, the ex- Leicester City boss added: "Most difficult 48 hours since I came to the club because people didn't support me and the team."
When asked if he was referring to people internally at Chelsea, he responded: "In general. Overall," before clarifying when asked if it was aimed at fans or the press: "I adore the fans and we are very happy with the fans."
Injury and Suspension Woes
Maresca also drew attention to Chelsea's ongoing fitness and disciplinary issues, noting they had been missing key forward Cole Palmer for much of the season, as well as being deprived of linchpin Moises Caicedo to a three-match ban and striker Liam Delap to two significant injuries.
"I truly praise the players and the squad because we have played 16 Premier League games, 5 of them without Moises Caicedo, 11 of them without Cole Palmer, almost all of them minus Liam Delap," he said.
"And this squad, no matter who is on the pitch, they are performing exceptionally. Today was five games in 12 days so undoubtedly when you see Cole Palmer there, we have said many times that he's our finest player but we play the vast majority of the season minus our top player.
"We play 5 games in the Premier League without Moises Caicedo. This is the reason why I'm so happy for the players and it's something that I would want people externally to appreciate because the effort from the players is outstanding."
Chelsea's triumph over Everton cemented their standing in fourth in the Premier League standings, with a Carabao Cup last-eight tie at Cardiff and a league journey to Newcastle scheduled in the coming days.
Speculation Over Maresca's Remark
It was unclear who or what prompted Maresca to describe the past 48 hours as the worst of his spell as Chelsea manager.
In that timeframe, the coach had traveled back with his backroom team and players from Bergamo, held a training session at the training ground, attended a pre-match press briefing where he appeared at ease, and secured a win over an in-form Everton side.
It was not obvious whether any particular media reports had irked him, if social media discourse were a factor, or if it was something deeper from within the hierarchy at Stamford Bridge.
Maresca only sought to rule out that it was an matter related to the club's fans, some of whom have still have yet to fully embrace him since his arrival from Leicester in July 2024.
