The Reason Los Blancos Possess 'Utter Trust' in Teenager Thiago Pitarch

The young midfielder playing
Thiago Pitarch has played seven matches for the Spanish giants, including five starts.

Whenever a teenage makes club a historic moment in a key Champions League tie against City, it inevitably draws praise and the spotlight.

In only his maiden start in the competition - and fifth appearance for the team - the young midfielder made a strong impression as the fifteen-time European champions claimed a three-nil last-16 first leg advantage at the Bernabeu.

The teenager, who also made his Real debut in the qualifying round a few weeks prior with a cameo off the bench at Benfica, then assisted Los Blancos overcome the English champions in the midweek return to confirm a last eight berth.

At 18 years and 226 days, the midfielder was the club's youngest player to begin two matches in the Champions League's latter rounds, beating star Vini Jr's record by 10 days.

A Meteoric Rise Through The Academy

The midfielder is the most recent to come through from the club's academy and is quickly establishing himself as one of the manager's most promising protegees.

He signed for Madrid from Leganes in 2023, having formerly spent time at Atletico and Getafe's youth teams, and initially featuring for the Juvenil C team, where he rapidly created a strong impression.

He worked his way up to the reserve side and it was in a friendly match in which they played against the senior squad, then managed by the former defender, where the youngster is said to have caught the attention of the current Real boss, who replaced the previous coach in the new year.

Reports would later describe the moment as "an instant connection," noting he excelled not only for his technical ability, but for the energy, personality and determination he brought to the team.

'His Greatest Quality Is His Personality'

During the pre-season of 2025, former boss Alonso invited Pitarch to train with the first team and gave him minutes during pre-season.

Yet, it was the change in manager that proved the defining moment in his career as he came on as a late substitute in both ties against the Portuguese side that led to the meeting with Pep Guardiola's team.

"I've dreamed of this every night when sleeping, the first day I began playing the game, every day you go to train and each day you have a game," stated Pitarch following his first appearance.

"I have just achieved my ambition with the greatest club in the planet and in the top tournament."

Given a starting debut in La Liga against Getafe - where he was for several seasons after arriving from Atletico in 2018 - he has kept his spot for the next four as fitness issues to Jude Bellingham and Dani Ceballos provided an opening.

Pitarch has taken it with displays that have belied his youth and inexperience.

"He's a extremely fast footballer, and you can see what he's capable of," remarked Arbeloa. "He's incredibly energetic, with excellent endurance, effort and mobility."

The player's mindset has also stood out to his coach.

"His greatest quality is his character," added he. "He constantly demands the ball, and even under pressure, he doesn't feel it.

"I realize people are astonished to see him start in a European fixture, but he's playing because I had total confidence in him to perform his normal game.

"Thiago will continue to get chances with the main squad. It is delightful to coach a talent like him."

A Future International Decision

Born in Fuenlabrada, in the Madrid region, and was raised deeply involved in the local game, moving through youth setups before joining Real Madrid's renowned La Fabrica system.

He holds dual Spanish and Moroccan citizenship, offering him the option to play for both nations at the highest level.

According to Fifa eligibility rules, footballers may appear for different countries at junior level without being permanently tied, with the final decision only final once they play in a official full international.

He has featured for the Spanish national team at underage levels, representing both the under-19 and under-20 sides, and took part in the 2025 Fifa Under-20 World Cup, where La Roja reached the quarter-finals.

Nevertheless, he has not yet decided to any full national side, who are monitoring his progress with interest.

Speaking recently, the player confirmed: "I haven't made my ultimate choice so far. My situation is great with the Spanish federation, but I'll make a decision in the near future."

This scenario mirrors that of other bi-national talents such as club colleague Brahim Diaz and Barca star Lamine Yamal. Whereas teenage Yamal chose La Roja, Diaz opted to play for the Atlas Lions.

Focus on the Future

At present, his attention is on making his mark in the Real side and repaying his manager's belief.

He played 74 minutes in the two-one win at the Etihad, which sealed a five-one overall triumph and a last-eight matchup with the German champions.

His substitution by fellow youth graduate in Angel underscored the coach's confidence in younger players to aid the team pursue trophies to come.

After his notable contributions to date on European football's biggest stage, the midfielder is tipped to play a key role in that.

"Arbeloa treats me the same. We deal with it very normally. I attempt not to overanalyze it too much - I must deserve my playing time on the pitch," he commented following the win at Manchester.
